“The life of a Buddhist Hospital Chaplain
under the Pandemic”
Noriko Kawai, M.Div. was born and raised in Kobe, Japan. She completed her Master of Divinity in Interfaith Chaplaincy at Claremont School of Theology, in Claremont, CA, and 6 units of Clinical Pastoral Education at Sharp HealthCare. Since 2015, she has been serving at Buddhist Temple of San Diego as a certified Minister’s Assistant, and is on her path to become an ordained Jodo Shinshu minister. Noriko is endorsed by Buddhist Churches of America to work as a professional chaplain in the healthcare setting. She is also an Interfaith Minister ordained by One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York. Noriko is an experienced chaplain, with specialties in death and dying, bereavement, behavioral health, and addiction and recovery.
